Artist Statement

Julia Fouser’s current practice is a reaction to her experiences in the care of the American medical-industrial complex. She appropriates imagery from medical textbooks and simplifies, distorts and recontextualizes it in her paintings in order to express her own feelings. As a person with mental illness who has struggled with the medical industry, she sees her practice as a way of reclaiming her voice.

Her process in creating a new work begins with gathering images and combining them digitally into collages that she then uses as references. She abstracts the collages she creates further in her paintings, transforming them through the act of painting onto canvases with either oil or acrylic paint. The final product is a distortion of that which is already distorted.
